Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is one of the most popular and well-known works in classical music.
This year marks the 300th anniversary of the publication of this beloved masterpiece. The Four Seasons is a set of four violin concertos, each musically depicting one of the seasons. To enhance the storytelling, Vivaldi wrote a sonnet for each season. The music vividly reflects the events, moods, and natural phenomena described in the sonnets—thunderstorms, a barking shepherd’s dog, the call of a cuckoo, harvest celebrations, and the comforting warmth of a fireplace on a frosty winter’s day are all present in this total work of art.
Inspired by Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, violinist, conductor, and composer Jaakko Kuusisto wrote a three-part suite for string orchestra and harpsichord titled The In-Between Seasons. Kuusisto named his movements May Day, Wind and Water, and First Snow.
The last time the Mikkeli City Orchestra performed The Four Seasons, Jaakko Kuusisto himself was the soloist. This time, the soloist will be the orchestra’s chief conductor Erkki Lasonpalo, who will also lead the ensemble. Come and experience the changing of the seasons in the Martti Talvela Hall.
